Harrison Garden
Mairangi Bay, North Shore

The Brief

To create maximum space for entertaining and an area for children to play in.

The Challenge

This house would be offered for sale two weeks after planting was completed, so the landscape had to appeal to a specific type of buyer - in this case a busy city family. We were also restricted by a small site.

The Solution

First priority was a low maintence garden. We chose plants that required little feeding or pruning, and by having ground cover plants we also reduced the need for weeding. And with the installation of an irrigation system we created a garden that only took around two hours a month to take care of.

Second we created privacy from neighbours making it easy for a family to relax from a busy schedule. We did this by screening out the neighbours with a selection of high growing hedges and specimen trees.

Space restrictions were managed by keeping the garden small and located around the edges of the section. In fact the garden was designed to jut out in very few places to leave as much lawn as possible, while a generous tiled area for outdoor entertaining also maximised the limited area.

And to ensure an immaculate finish, we painted the existing wooden fences black to highlight the natural greens of the plants, and placed pots by doors to soften and enhance the entrances.
