Dobbe Garden
Bayswater, North Shore
The Brief
To create a landscape for a brand new waterfront home.
The Challenge
The owners required a low maintenance garden that complemented the architecture of their new home. The section also had a steep bank that lead the to water and this needed to be stabilised.
The Solution
The house was a bold modern design and we created a dramatic landscape to surround it by planting visually stunning flora. For example, we planted the Clivias under the existing trees - striking when in flower and able to cope with the shade.
In close consultation, the owners chose a selection of artwork and sculpture to give the garden their own personal touch and add to the distinctly modern feel. The choice of palms was also very important since we had limited space to work with.
The visual appeal of any landscape is crucial, however, we also took into account the different perspectives the landscape would be viewed from. In the Dobbe Garden we wanted to create a focal point out of one window. We did this by locating a palm outside the chosen window and created a screen outside another window with a clumping palm.
Erosion and soil stability was also a potential issue on the steep bank at the front of the section. To counter any possible problems we planted native flaxes that were perfect for holding soil and also blended in with the existing native vegetation.
